I am embarking on a new phase in my life. . . again.  I have decided to take care of myself. I am working on eating better, exercising, and spending more time with my family. But this is new… and it is hard! I came to the realization that I had a choice; I could either continue on a downward spiral of weight gain that would inevitably cause health problems and self loathing or I could do something about it.

Disaster Solution: the WEB PDF Print E-mail

We don’t often think about preparing for a disaster. The “500 year flood” hit again after only 15 years but did not hurt my business or my home. I was lucky. Even with a fault line running through the state of Iowa, the ticking time bomb of a major earth quake is reserved for California. On the news we hear of the hurricanes and tropical storms threatening New Orleans AGAIN, and we think it will never happen to us.

Online video. I read two articles today talking about the effectiveness of online video and how companies are reducing online budgets. OMMA Video keynoter Larry Kramer said in not only do you not have to spend a ton of money producing online video but, “you don’t need 10 million viewers” to have great content, either.” Where the author makes the mistake is in indicating that companies have not adopted online video as a content tool because of the demand on production value and cost. I don't think it has anything to do with cost of production nor do I think that there has been a great demand for “high quality” video content. I think that most companies just don't know where to start, don't realize the positive impact and are afraid to give it a shot.

It never ceases to amaze me, entrepreneurs who invest millions of dollars into a business and forget to carve a slice in the budget for marketing. Field of Dreams was a great movie but the “Build it and they will come” approach is the best of Hollywood fiction. Sure, in the 1940's, the sheer excitement of something new drove people out in the streets. Howard Hughes’ first film Hells Angels drew crowds of more than a half a million for its premiere. Today, the splendor of a new building, the “buzz” of a new business and the social network chain is not enough.

Whether or not we are in a recession is something for the economist to battle over, but without a doubt, now is the time to figure out ways to stabilize or increase business while decreasing expenses. It is every business' goal to become more profitable, to survive a tough economy and the commoditization and globalization of our marketplace. Improving how we market ourselves rests at the core of our success.
